Platte Clove Nature Preserve is owned and managed by the Catskill Center. Just South of the town of Tannersville, the preserve sits on the south side of rt 16 just east of the Platte Clove Community, an Ana-Baptist community that is similar to the Amish and Mennonite sects. The nature preserve is home to Patteskill Falls and the little red cabin that is home to the artist- in-residency program. The nature trail from the road down to the base of the falls is a half mile long but very steep. The clove was made famous by the painters of the Hudson River School of American painters.
The trail on the south side of the creek is treacherous but doable. There are 26 falls from the top of the rt 16 down to the bottom in the town of West Saugerties. the north side of the creek as steep drop offs of hundreds of feet and very slippery. The trail through the preserve takes one up to Devil’s Kitchen, an old blue stone quarry. The trail splits at Devil’s Kitcken to the Overlook trail which gives hiker many views of the Hudson River Valley leading one down to the town of Woodstock.
